Root Down: Get Back to Real Food

Posted to Greg Giessler

Root Down: Get back to Real Food was the name of our presentation today at our Rotary Club. The presentation was provided by Megan Hanson the daughter of one of our Dublin-Worthington Rotary Club members Dr. Dave Hanson.

The presentation was based upon what we can do as consumers to eat more whole foods, reduce the intake of processed foods and sugary beverages. As well, her presentation touched upon teaching yourself and others how to cook. In doing so, you could also shop at local Farmer’s markets and support grocers who make it their business, to supply healthy, local foods.

Also, the presentation focused on an organization that Megan started called RootdownLA where their mission is to confront obesity in and related health issues in South Los Angeles, by engaging youth in educational experiences and skills training necessary to build a healthy food community.

One of the topics in Megan’s presentation regarding childhood obesity in Los Angeles is the fact that many of the economically depressed areas of South Los Angeles are filled with more liquor stores, fast food restaurants, corner carryout’s and other food franchises that do not give people an opportunity for healthier alternatives. I applaud Megan’s efforts in her attempts to educate the youth of South Los Angeles and her attempts to build a stronger community through working with the youth.

I found the presentation very stimulating because in our not now…right now instant gratification culture many of us, inclusive of myself, have found easier ways to eat unhealthy “fast” foods than enjoying healthier alternatives. Megan’s presentation has planted the seed in my head to work towards being a better me.
