Upper Arlington Reaches out to Haiti Quake Victims

Posted to Phil Giessler

Upper Arlington, Ohio is a community of well established homes where many residents move back after graduation from college. Steeped in history, one of the most looked forward to events is the July 4 parade. Surrounding neighborhoods participate in the parade, as well, and chairs mark saved seating beginning the day before the parade. This is an opportunity for many neighbors to invite family and friends to picnic together. The outstanding July 4 fireworks in U.A. is equally exciting. But Upper Arlington is much more!

This community of homes ranges in price from mid hundreds to million dollar homes. The schools are thought to be among the best and children who graduate tend to go on to higher education. Along with educating their youth, through church membership and school activities, the children are taught to give back to the community. Recently, a group of sixth graders from Jones Middle School, in U.A., after having witnessed pictures and T.V. coverage of the disaster in Haiti decided to do something about it. Their goal – to collect crutches to help the quake victims. The name of their project is Lean On Me, cooperating with an aid group in Virginia. Contributing their own money did not satisfy them so they have gone to the public for support. They planned a Limb-O-Fest fundraiser, not only to raise the funding needed, but to show the people of Haiti that people in Upper Arlington, Ohio do care. Donations have been coming in and the Ohio Orthopedic Center of Excellence has joined the campaign. All of this falls under the national project Walking Free sponsored by Physicians for Peace.
