Going outside the box

Today my wife told me she “stepped outside the box.” Meaning, she did something she previously would not have done or would have been comfortable doing before. As she drove into Tim Horton’s to pick up donuts for our two grandchildren, an older looking and very discheveled man was walking down the street. Parking the car, she entered the restaurant with the children and asked them how they would feel if she would offer to buy donuts and coffee for the man. They agreed and waited patiently while she walked to the street and talked to the man. He followed her back to an outside table where she suggested he sit and she planned to take him the food and then sit inside with the girls.

Inside she ordered and delivered the food and he offered his appreciation. Then, ordering the food for the girls and herself, she decided she would make the effort not only to feed the man, but to talk to the man, thinking he might not have many conversations during his days. The girls were shy and remained fairly close to grandma. The man’s hand were very dirty, his long hair and beard were dirty and he did not smell like the people the children were used to. But, the three joined the homeless man at the table and began a memory.

Grandma began a conversation with the man, while sharing coffee and donuts, and asked him if he would mind answering some questions. She proceeded to discuss why he was walking, where he had been, was he homeless?…where did he sleep at night, and very personal life living questions. He spoke perfect grammar, very kindly and willingly, and for a few moments they were friends. The children may have seen that there are different kinds of people in this world and we do not all have easy lives …the girls being so young may have seen nothing.

When they readied themselves to go, after exchanging first names, he put out his filthy hand to shake hands with my wife. One second of uncertainty and she held out her hand and gripped his and then they parted.

I hope something was learned today. I know my wife learned something and was very changed by the morning coffee. (She asked could she get him anything else? He said, “do they sell tobacco in there?” instead he settled for another donut.)

Posted by: Phil Giessler

Years ago school began after Labor Day, but today’s schools seem to start much earlier. In Ohio, most begin the last week of August. Many families are already beginning to feel the stress and drama that school presents. While many children go of to school with no problems, there are children who have great difficulty leaving home, leaving mom and siblings, knowing they will not see each other for hours.

There are suggestions on the website to help both parents and children. Simply type into Google; School worries, or school is beginning, or stress with the first day of school. Some helpful sites are: www.kidshealth.org or www2.scholastic.com.

Parents are worried about the teacher who their child may be assigned to, children worry that they may not have friends. Remember, we are all in this together, we all have children or grandchildren taking these very important steps so talk to each other. It helps to know that there are few out there who are not experiencing this anxiety. Relax and know that most worries never happen and it will be ok. Have a safe and fun school year.

Posted by: Phil Giessler

Still lots to do, so do not stress. Sunday night, August 8, residents were treated to a concert on the Green in downtown Olde Worthington. The Ohio State University Alum Band preformed to the crowd of people and did their best to ready everyone for another, hopefully, successful football season. Now more concerts are planned so check them out at www.worthington.org for their schedule. If you are looking for last minute get-aways before the school year starts, Cedar Point and Kings Island are just a few hours away from Columbus/Worthington, Ohio and are sure to put smiles on your children’s faces and yours. Northern Ohio is a Mecca for wineries. One recently opened winery is Quarry Hill, in Berlin Heights, Ohio, just east of Rt. 61 and south of Rt. 6, sitting up on a hill is the new facility. Surrounded by an outside veranda, with a glimpse of the lake, this is an outgrowth of several years of sales within the Quarry Hill barn and recently moved to the hillside. The Quarry Hill orchard is our favorite spot to purchase our summer peaches, corn, melon and in the Fall our apples. Visit www.QuarryHillWinery.org for hours of operation.

Another fun place to taste the wines of Northern Ohio is located just off Rt. 60 and south of Vermillion. Looking out over the grape vines, one gets a feeling of being right there while the grapes are being selected for harvest. Both spots are owned and operated by local families who have lived in the area many years and both just a 2 hour drive from Columbus, Ohio. Call ahead for hours and well worth a visit. Relax and enjoy the summer and fall!

Posted by: Phil Giessler

Worthington, Ohio celebrates July 4 with a BANG!

This year again Worthington came through with a fun filled day for the entire family in honor of July 4. I was fortunate to have been raised above the crowd in the outstanding Worthington Fire Departments ladder truck for pictures shown here. I was able to capture the Worthington Presbyterian Church steeple, the flags, and the people enjoying the picnic.

Beginning early with exhibits at the McConnell Arts Center the day was complete with nighttime fireworks filling the sky. Sponsored by the Dublin-Worthington Rotary and he city of Worthington, and open to the public, food was served, the Columbus Zoo visited with animal babies, face painting was a popular event and the Worthington Police Dept. provided child fingerprinting as well! The community was entertained by the Medieval Knights and enjoyed a Blacksmith demonstration. Popcorn and beach balls were given out by Cam Taylor Co., Realtors and all were serenaded by the Orange Johnson Singers. A city founded in 1803, Worthington’s community heritage is celebrated and community spirit is strong. Consider visiting Worthington, Ohio.

Posted by: Phil Giessler

In Central Ohio, Park National Bank is offering low rates for the homebuyer. At historically low rates for a 30 YEAR FIXED TERM, now is a great time to buy! Re-financing is possible as well, at a low rate, based on meeting the parameters set by PN.

New home Builders are offering great deals to homebuyers as incentives to buy. For example, one builder might “throw in” a finished basement. The current rates allow you to purchase a larger home with the same payments you might have made prior to low rates being offered. As well, you can arrange shorter pay off times due to the lower rates. It is always beneficial to sit down with a loan officer to learn the best investment for your dollar.

Previously loved homes are also a GREAT BUY. Most owners are VERY REALISTIC in their offering prices and are making serious efforts in properly preparing the home prior to marketing.

IT IS TRULY A “PERFECT STORM” TIME to buy. LOW RATES and INCENTED sellers EQUALS a GREAT BUYING OPPORTUNITY!!

Remember there is a tax advantage to owning your own home. So, take a moment and contact a professional: Dave Zambo, , or you may call Dave directly at 614-841-0771. Questions? These women have been friends since their years at Ohio State University, where they were members of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Times were different then, boys were not allowed on the “second floor” of the Kappa House and the girls were able to establish camaraderie which has lasted over 45 years! All live in the Columbus, Ohio area: Worthington, Dublin, and nearby Granville, Ohio. All have remained happily married to their husbands who also attended Ohio State University and where they all came together.

Just a short drive north, 2 hours, is Sandusky, Ohio. While Cedar Point is the main attraction, the “girls” chose to spend their time at a cottage overlooking Lake Erie. Beginning years ago as a one day event, this has grown to last the entire month of June, thus allowing families to entertain all month with block parties, drop in picnics, and one on one groupings. The goal is to establish strong neighborhoods and promote friendships. With our busy lives, sometimes it takes a community to bring us together!

Neighbors are challenged to commit 5 random acts of kindness during “Hi Neighbor” month. Greet, welcome, assist, introduce, party, visit, or just knock on doors. Get to know your neighbors in Worthington, Ohio this month!

Posted by: Phil Giessler

Our two grandchildren are healthy and happy and secure with their surroundings. We realize that all are not so lucky.

Very good friends of ours have experienced over the years heart breaking medical concerns with their granddaughter, Ellie a small 8 year old child. She suffers from a little known disease called mitochondrial disease. She happens to have a unique type of the disease which is very aggressive. As a twin with a brother, she appeared normal at birth. Around 6 months her development began to slow. Finally, at age two, she was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease and her parents were given bleak reports.

Now, at 8, she has lost the ability to walk. She cannot speak, eat or breath on her own. Her body is failing her. With a quick mind, she is aware, and she continues to have amazing character. She smiles, laughs and gives the “thumbs up” sign.

This is a very complex disease, genetic and the cells that create the energy the body needs to function are impaired. Everyday is a struggle to survive. Ellie’s parents are on a mission to help her survive and to raise awareness and funding for research for this disease.

The event they established as a yearly event will soon to be held Saturday, June 13, 2010 at Powell, Ohio Liberty Park is a 5 K run, 1 mile walk and kid’s run, for this special cause, Race for Ellie. This is a great family activity and awards are given to the top three male and female finishers. There are a large number of categories to enter from 19 and under to over 60. Information is available at or by calling 614-306-2109. Donations are accepted if you cannot attend.

Help Ellie! At the same time help provide funding for this very debilitating disease, mitochondrial disease. Give from your heart! Visit Ellie’s website at www.raceforellie.org or for more information call Phil Giessler at 614-888-0307, Cam Taylor Co., Realtors.

Posted by: Phil Giessler

We discussed the word for May, TRUSTWORTHINESS. We sang, we read a book about the trusty elephant the mailman, we did a “do you trust?” game and simply discussed. From September, 2009 thru May 2010, we have discussed with the children Respect, Responsibility, Self-discipline, Compassion, Tolerance, Honesty, Diligence, and Commitment. Time did not permit the last three: Moral Courage, Spirituality, and Integrity.

These young children listened with their ears and their hearts and communicated with us their thoughts on the meaning of the qualities of each month and shared their experiences with us. It was awesome to hear about the feelings and beliefs coming forth from such young minds. We felt we were learning as much as we hoped they were learning. We are hopeful that next Fall, as second graders, they will show these qualities to their classmates and we will all be better for it!

Consider moving to our wonderful communities in central Ohio. Worthington, Dublin, Upper Arlington, New Albany, Westerville, Hilliard, Grandview, the Short North and downtown homes and condominiums all have so much to offer. Call us at 1-800-848-6996 or visit us at www.camtaylor.com. We are with you from start to finish, through the process of buying or selling your home.

Posted by: Phil Giessler
