<p><img class="floatright" src="http://images.propopoly.com/image/apple.gif" id="imgSupplemental2418" style="cursor: pointer; cursor: hand;" /><p>Our granddaughter directed her 2nd grade parent-teacher conference in the <a href="http://www.worthington.k12.oh.us/" target="_blank">Worthington, Ohio school system</a>. This is a new process and the review from mom was that it went very well. At age 8 , she introduced the teacher, explained her goals for the year and how she would attempt to achieve the goals. She was also privy to the conversation regarding her progress, ability to get along in the classroom and basic information for parent and child.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Throughout this process we have learned from our daughter that the children are “graded/evaluated” on a numbering system. There are several systems and school systems may differ. There is DRA/EDL level (reading level numbering 1-60) up to 6th grade. Each child is tested and given a level of achievement and then may use that number for measuring progress as the year progresses and for selecting learning materials appropriate for the child. Lexile also charts reading. A DRA level of 16-28 could mean a Lexile number of 300-600.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The wonderful thing is that the Worthington Public Library uses these numbers and will help parent or child select books to encourage rather than frustrate early readers. Today we had 4 librarians helping us find books and at the same time teaching each other how the program works. It was awesome and we are proud to be a part of the Worthington Public Schools, in Ohio and to have an outstanding <a href="http://www.worthingtonlibraries.org" target="_blank">Worthington Public Library System</a>. <p><img class="floatleft" src="http://images.propopoly.com/image/baseboard.jpg" id="imgSupplemental2362" style="cursor: pointer; cursor: hand;" /><p>If you own a vacation home or your primary home has baseboard heating….if you are away from your home for periods of time….if you worry that your system might be safe…there are some things you should consider. Based on the past week-end experience my wife and I had, heading to our cottage at Lake Erie for a needed rest, time to sit by the fire and read books, we instead spent the week-end attending to a water break in our baseboard hot water system.</p><p>The problem arose at a rusted release valve attached to the copper circulation lines. In this particular situation, the pipe and valve were enclosed under the stove with no access from the outside. So, when release valve separated (after 30+ years), it sprayed hot water upwards and outwards spreading into the cabinets and out onto the floor. After draining all the water onto the floor it actually ran the heating system dry and caused the circulating pump, water cooled, to burn out, thus halting heat to the cottage.</p><p>So, long story short, we had much destruction due to a rusted joint in the copper pipe system. Apparently this book had been due back in July and it is now late September! The fine was huge and the collection had been turn over to a collection agency! Upon further conversation with the librarian, I discovered the notices were being sent to a year old, no longer lived in, address. Since there had been no notice at the current address, the book slipped through the cracks. The library could not have been more helpful. They scratched the overdue fine and allowed me to pay only the penalty due to the collection agency. Note: when you are moving, remember to give your change of address to everyone. Do not forget the library, school, exercise facilities. You may be missing important information as we did. <p><img class="floatleft" src="http://images.propopoly.com/image/Handshake.jpg" id="imgSupplemental1437" style="cursor: pointer; cursor: hand;" /></p><p>Today my wife told me she “stepped outside the box.” Meaning, she did something she previously would not have done or would have been comfortable doing before. As she drove into Tim Horton’s to pick up donuts for our two grandchildren, an older looking and very discheveled man was walking down the street. Parking the car, she entered the restaurant with the children and asked them how they would feel if she would offer to buy donuts and coffee for the man. They agreed and waited patiently while she walked to the street and talked to the man. He followed her back to an outside table where she suggested he sit and she planned to take him the food and then sit inside with the girls.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Inside she ordered and delivered the food and he offered his appreciation. Then, ordering the food for the girls and herself, she decided she would make the effort not only to feed the man, but to talk to the man, thinking he might not have many conversations during his days. The girls were shy and remained fairly close to grandma. The man’s hand were very dirty, his long hair and beard were dirty and he did not smell like the people the children were used to. But, the three joined the homeless man at the table and began a memory.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Grandma began a conversation with the man, while sharing coffee and donuts, and asked him if he would mind answering some questions. She proceeded to discuss why he was walking, where he had been, was he homeless?…where did he sleep at night, and very personal life living questions. He spoke perfect grammar, very kindly and willingly, and for a few moments they were friends. The children may have seen that there are different kinds of people in this world and we do not all have easy lives …the girls being so young may have seen nothing.</p><p class="MsoNormal">When they readied themselves to go, after exchanging first names, he put out his filthy hand to shake hands with my wife. One second of uncertainty and she held out her hand and gripped his and then they parted.</p><p class="MsoNormal">I hope something was learned today. I know my wife learned something and was very changed by the morning coffee. (She asked could she get him anything else? Years ago school began after Labor Day, but today’s schools seem to start much earlier. In Ohio, most begin the last week of August. Many families are already beginning to feel the stress and drama that school presents. While many children go of to school with no problems, there are children who have great difficulty leaving home, leaving mom and siblings, knowing they will not see each other for hours.</p><p class="MsoNormal">There are suggestions on the website to help both parents and children. Simply type into Google; School worries, or school is beginning, or stress with the first day of school. Some helpful sites are: <a href="http://www.kidshealth.org" target="_blank">www.kidshealth.org</a> or <a href="http://www2.scholastic.com/" target="_blank">www2.scholastic.com</a>.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Parents are worried about the teacher who their child may be assigned to, children worry that they may not have friends. Remember, we are all in this together, we all have children or grandchildren taking these very important steps so talk to each other. It helps to know that there are few out there who are not experiencing this anxiety. Relax and know that most worries never happen and it will be ok. Northern Ohio is a Mecca for wineries. One recently opened winery is Quarry Hill, in Berlin Heights, Ohio, just east of Rt. 61 and south of Rt. 6, sitting up on a hill is the new facility. Surrounded by an outside veranda, with a glimpse of the lake, this is an outgrowth of several years of sales within the Quarry Hill barn and recently moved to the hillside. The Quarry Hill orchard is our favorite spot to purchase our summer peaches, corn, melon and in the Fall our apples. <p>This year again Worthington came through with a fun filled day for the entire family in honor of July 4. I was fortunate to have been raised above the crowd in the outstanding Worthington Fire Departments ladder truck for pictures shown here. I was able to capture the <a href="http://www.worthingtonpresbyterian.com" target="_blank">Worthington Presbyterian Church steeple</a>, the flags, and the people enjoying the picnic.</p><p>Beginning early with exhibits at the <a href="http://www.mcconnellarts.org" target="_blank">McConnell Arts Center</a> the day was complete with nighttime fireworks filling the sky. Sponsored by the Dublin-Worthington Rotary and he city of Worthington, and open to the public, food was served, the Columbus Zoo visited with animal babies, face painting was a popular event and the Worthington Police Dept. provided child fingerprinting as well! The community was entertained by the Medieval Knights and enjoyed a Blacksmith demonstration. Popcorn and beach balls were given out by <a href="http://www.camtaylor.com" target="_blank">Cam Taylor Co., Realtors</a> and all were serenaded by the <a href="http://www.worthington.org/about/orangejohnson.cfm" target="_blank">Orange Johnson Singers</a>. A city founded in 1803, Worthington’s community heritage is celebrated and community spirit is strong.
