“Hi-Neighbor” in Worthington Ohio

This past Sunday residents from around Worthington came together in their neighborhoods for block parties. This event is initiated by the City of Worthington each summer to encourage neighbors to come together and have fun as a community.

In my neighborhood on Evening Street and the surrounding streets, we had a lot of neighbors of various ages and stages in life join together for the food and festivities. One very popular group of visitors each year are the Worthington Firefighters. They always show up in style with their big shiny fire truck for the kids to tour.

I look forward to this event each year because it’s a time when we can come together as a community and get to know our neighbors better and start new friendships. There’s something to be said about not only knowing who your neighbors are but getting to know them.

For more information about the City of Worthington and what it has to offer contact me, Leigh Reynolds at 614-523-6638 or email me at leighreynolds@camtaylor.com

WOW! Cam Taylor Client to Develop New Gasoline Source

Would you believe our surprise and then pride to see a photograph of Richard Sayre, currently a Professor at OSU, headlining the Science Section (Metro) of the Columbus Dispatch June 24, 2008.
Click here to read the full story.

According to the article, Richard's research into Algae as a new source for Gasoline will create a marketable product in just a very few years.

The beautiful Sayre home at 300 E South Street, Worthington is currently listed by the Cam Taylor Co. for$489,900 (see http://www.daveanddan.com featured homes). We had featured this historical home in an earlier blog.

The Sayre's will move to St Louis this fall to continue the research into Algae and bring to us all a much less expensive as well as a renewable source of gasoline for the future. We at Cam Taylor are proud to know and work with Richard. Columbus and OSU's loss will be St Louis's gain!

We met to discuss the book Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazi. We had over fifteen people who attended the first event and probably another fifteen people who signed up to be part of the discussion group. It was a very impressive turn out to say the least. The group is comprised of many Worthington residents and business owners interested in meeting new people and relationship building. The group organizer is Jeff Regensburger who works with the Worthington Library. If you are not familiar with the Worthington Libraries system it was the 2007 Library of the Year by the Gale/Library Journal .
Also sharing in the book club efforts is Kathryn Pough the director of the Worthington Chamber of Commerce. The Worthington Chamber of Commerce helps area businesses make connections to grow their business, promote economic development, and improve the dynamics of the community. The chamber has over 650 members and is comprised of individuals and businesses from Worthington and the surrounding areas. The Chamber of Commerce offers many ways to get involved with the community for more information regarding the chamber check out www.worthingtonchamber.org

Arena District Kickball League week 3

Brown Chicken Brown Cow…week two of the Arena District Kickball game an official rain out. Week Three found Brown Chicken Brown Cow in a close game against the Kick Nashers. Once again, we came out on the wrong side of the equation. Brown Chicken Brown Cow lost a close battle 8-7 but what a game! It was a much more commanding performance than our inaugural blowout where we lost 18-0. Our team really is starting to come together. We seemed to be playing more of an intelligent game of kickball but it was still not enough to pull out the victory. Once again it was a beautiful day in downtown Columbus, Ohio and a perfect day to have a few post kickball game brews at the Frog, Bear and Wild Boar Bar which sponsors the Arena District Kickball League. Though we are 0-2 we still have a positive attitude and what we lack on the field we make up for off the field! Frog, Bear and Wild Boar Bar is located a short distance from the field where we play and is located on the east side of Nationwide Arena.

Marathon in training... week three

Marathon in Training week three: Once again week three found me away from Columbus, Ohio and missing the Saturday morning session with the Marathon In Training group. However, I did get in my long run for the week in Mohican State Park which is located in southern Ashland County close to Loudonville, Ohio. The park covers 1,110 acres with 5 glorious miles of the beautiful Clear Fork and Mohican rivers making their way through it. The park provides many opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast including hiking, fishing, and camping. As well, Mohican State Park offers a resort lodge and cottages.

Gary Williams, the president of our Dublin-Worthington Rotary, picked me up Saturday morning at 3:30 a.m. and we drove to the park. Gary is training to run the Mohican 100 mile Trail Run which is this coming weekend. We arrived at the park and started running. Overall, we were on the trails for around 5 and half hours and in total ran 24 plus miles. To say the least it was a great way to start a Saturday! Well, for me it was a great excuse to accomplish absolutely nothing the rest of the day!

If you are interested in experiencing the outdoors within an hour and a half from Columbus, Ohio I highly recommend Mohican State Park. Quite a few opportunities exist for your outdoor entertainment!

Downtown Columbus Ohio - It's Not Just Football!

Thousands of people pounce on Columbus come fall during Ohio State’s football season. No longer is it just about OSU football, but now Columbus is gaining notoriety as a “happening urban center.”
Part of that is due to the Short North area. Much like the north end of Boston, our north end is filled with restaurants, shops and art galleries. Initiated 20 years ago and still happening today, the first Saturday of every month the Short North hosts “The Gallery Hop.” The galleries house not only local artist’s works, but national and international artists as well. Come December the Gallery becomes the “Holiday Hop” with all the festive trimmings of the season.

The Gospel Mass, heard by over 600 church members and guests, featured more than 60 voices singing accompanied by two pianos and bass guitar. What a treat for singers and parishioners.

Golfing is everywhere in Central Ohio

Golfing is everywhere in Central Ohio. Some say there are more greens per capita in the Columbus area than in any other non resort community in the United States. Jack Nicklaus’ designed Muirfield Golf Club gains most of the attention as the location of the annual Memorial Tournament which is considered a near Major on the PGA Tour.

If a giant golf course community is not your choice, there is an enclave of luxury estate homes that has private golfing opportunities in its own community. Wingate Farms, just a few minutes north of Columbus in the Olentangy School District offers three holes for the owners, no tee times required here.
The residences on acre plus lots have recent home sales from $700,000.00 and up in to the millions. Other amenities offered are tennis, sheltered picnic areas and walking trails. I found this family (pictured on the left) enjoying the golf and play areas.

I do not live in Wingate but if I wanted privacy and wanted the unique benefits - there is no better place to be in the Columbus area. Oh, I do have two listings here so maybe this sounds a little like an advertisement, but it is an amazing luxury residential find.

Marathon in Training week two …

Once again I missed the group training session at Thomas Worthington High School. Fortunately, I did not miss the long run for the week. Instead of staying in Columbus for the weekend I had the opportunity to travel to southeast Ohio close to Logan in the Hocking Hills region. Outside of Logan is a year round retreat called Camp Akita. Camp Akita is a mission of the First Community Church, in Columbus, Ohio. The camp can accommodate a wide range of group sizes up to 200 people. Camp Akita has over 1,200 acres, 15 acres of hiking trails, and a 7 acre lake. The land was originally donated by John Galbreath, a local philanthropist, back in 1949.

The weekend was perfect! Great weather and good times had by all. A group of about 10 went down for the weekend to help prepare the camp
before the summer sessions begin. We had projects of making a nature center, making flower boxes, and quite a bit of moving furniture from
building to building.

I was lucky enough to be able to go for a 10mile run through the camp
trails and along some of the winding roads surrounding the camp. The
hills made more difficult than running in Columbus on the Olentangy
multi-use trail, but it was a nice and welcome change. The only sounds
were the sounds of nature and me.

Later in this summer I will be travelling with a group of 15 people
through Camp Akita to Luperon in the Dominican Republic to build houses.
This will be my third and the third overall mission trip with Akita
International to the Dominican Republic. Both times in the past have
been unbelievable experiences.

If you have the ability to travel to Camp Akita or travel to the Hocking
Hills region of Ohio you will have a memorable experience. For further information check out http://www.campakita.org

Arena District Kickball - Fun Columbus Sports

(said with a little twang of bow chicka bow wow.) As well, you get the
team name of our Arena District Kickball team. Yesterday marked the
first game of our summer kickball season! The game was played in
McFerson Commons located near North Bank Park, The North Bank
Condominiums, and Burnham Square in downtown Columbus. The league is
sponsored by the Frog Bear and Wild Boar Bar.

Team Brown Chicken Brown Cow started the season with an unimpressive
performance. Somehow, team Saved by the Balls was able to score at will
against our inexperienced field play. When it was all said and done
team Saved by the Balls had scored eighteen points while team Brown
Chicken Brown Cow had a big zero. Some might call that that a goose egg
or for our purposes a chicken egg! Despite not scoring a single point
Brown Chicken Brown Cow managed to have a good time!
Though we have a lot of work to do on the field, I am sure Brown Chicken
Brown Cow will be able to make up for it in after game festivities win
or lose!

Our team is comprised of over twenty players that are somehow connected
through work at, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Camp Akita, or because
someone was able to persuade them to come out and play kickball. I
mean, who wouldn’t want to come out and play kickball, right? All in
all, it was a great time and provided a place to meet new people and
reconnect with some old friends!

The SAIL program has encouraged the children to use their imagination and learn through “real life” situations. They put their freshly honed skills into a complete celebration beginning with invitations delivered to their parents.

When I first approached the classroom, I was drawn in by the African music playing in the background. One of the students then greeted me with “jambo”. I had learned from my daughter that “jambo” was a Swahili word that translates into “hello”. Swahili is the language of Rwanda, which has been one of the primary focuses of their African studies. I was then handed two flyers. One flyer was a layout of the classroom which mapped out 6 different stations: jewelry making with beads, Swahili translating, African music (bongos), food flavors and tasting, engota making (the soft circular item placed on the head for people carrying objects on them on top of their heads), and even a puppet show about friendship! The other handout was similar to a passport so that you could collect a stamp after completing your visit of each station.

I begin my journey being directed to “station # 3” which turned out to be the Swahili translation. I quickly learned the words for medicine and father. I asked one of the “teachers” about the importance of the words that we were learning. The answer that I received was not one typically given by a 7 year old. She explained to me that the importance of the words learned were mainly for the “visitors” of Rwanda. Because their country is so different from ours, she explained that it was important for us to learn about what they need to help them with their “sustainability”. Medicine was desperately needed, as was protection of the rain forest. I could see the “caring and concern” in her eyes as she explained this to me. Upon completion of this station, I was directed to the bongos.

The bongos and drums were a “hit” to all of the students, and I watched as each child took turns trying out the instruments. The smiles at this station were never ending.
After taking my turn, one of the students suggested that I “grab some food” and visit the jewelry making station.

The food tables had a variety of African foods that included: fried plantains, coconut flavored rice, cookies, trail mixes, and fruits. It was an array of wonderful odors, and delights for the taste buds. With a full plate, I headed off to make a beaded necklace.

The student that headed the jewelry making station suggested that I take a piece of twine, and a handful of colorful beads. I had her explain to me how we could tie off the string, and make a necklace that might be “typical” for African adornments. She laughed and told me “the more colors the better!”
As I was completing the jewelry station, one of the classroom “managers” that had greeted me at the door, quieted the room, and pleasantly invited everyone to stop what they were doing so that they could gather around the “drama” stage for a puppet show performance.

Once all of the students, parents, siblings, and grand parents gathered, we were ready for the show. The show was fully scripted (written by the children) and the three puppeteers delivered a riveting performance of friendship. The show was a success and the students proudly took their bows.

After the show, I headed off to the engota station. One of the students showed me how this important accessory was made.

I was excited and proud to witness how much thought and effort was placed into making this a perfect “African Celebration” by Mrs. Cervantes class. I realized that each of the students not only looked at this as a fun day, but also as a day to spread the importance and “awareness” of what they have been learning in their class.
